Suki Won A Million RM But Faizal Won A Million Hearts
(As posted in Rentak Sejuta)
It didn¡¦t seem at all right when 90% of the live studio audience kept still & quiet in disbelief when Suki Low was announced the winner of the first edition of OIAM. In the weeks leading up to the finale, the media had been portraying Suki as the popular one, but that misconception was clearly shattered on the night of the finale, as everyone in the audience knew exactly who the true crowd favourite really was, and were almost unanimously rooting for him.
Suki didn¡¦t win OIAM because she had the most talent. She didn¡¦t win it because she was the most popular. And she certainly didn¡¦t win it because she had the total support of the Chinese either, as many people seem to assume. She won simply because the final results could be so easily manipulated by a few who were willing to invest in her, as the prize at stake was more than worth the financial effort. Can¡¦t blame them for doing it. After all it was an effective & reasonably foolproof strategy, which of course the other 2 finalist failed to consider or were not financially solvent enough to attempt. I strongly believe if a transparent count back were to be done to show actually how many independent numbers actually voted for her, it would be quite apparent that the numbers will fall far below that of Faizal¡¦s or even Alif¡¦s. I believe it will also show a dramatic high quantum of votes for a select few numbers. It was also be quite apparent that it would not have cost ¡§investors¡¨ a lot either to easily sway the votes in anybody¡¦s favour, looking at the final vote count.
Don¡¦t get me wrong. I am not saying that Suki Low is not talented or does not have the potential to be OIAM. But she honestly doesn¡¦t deserve it when there was someone else consistently better, was more creative and delivered a lot more throughout the competition than her. And that was excluding his explosive final number which brought the house down and the audience to their feet, not once, but twice. It was also quite obvious who the real crowd favourite was at the end of the long competition. And it was more than obvious that the whole country was devastated by the results when the best & the most popular competitor didn¡¦t win it.
I still remember when Daniel won MI2. I was rooting for Nita then, but I was not sore at all that Daniel won. A lot of people complained that he won because of his popularity, but, that was still okay with me, as he still displayed a reasonable modicum of talent, and it was what the fans wanted. Looking back at the MI2 Grand Finale in Genting last year, it was quite clear that Daniel was gonna win it because he had the support of nearly the entire studio audience. Suki Low did not even have that. It was Faizal who had that. Even Alif¡¦s fans seem to outnumber Suki¡¦s. Even at the ¡§After Party¡¨ after the show, it was Faizal who had endless streams admirers who could not wait to get a piece of him, while Suki was pretty much ignored. So it comes as a big surprise and a blow as well as an insult to our collective intelligence that the results did not concur with the general perception. In fact, it was a crying shame.
Compounding all this was a faulty SMS voting system which had everyone who was voting for Faizal, pretty furious. How could anyone rescue Faizal if their votes could not be dispatched or tallied? To make matters worse, the service providers still charged for all those rejected votes. The cheek of them.
The bottom line is this. It was more than obvious who the real OIAM should have been, whether on talent or even popularity. It¡¦s unfortunate that the really deserving of the lot did not become the OIAM but I believe he is the OIAM in the minds of most. Nobody will remember this OIAM for Suki Low. They will remember the shambles of a voting system that OIAM deployed. They will remember that they got screwed out of their hard earned money. But most of all they will remember it for the outstanding performances of Faizal Tahir and how he was robbed out of his deserving title. Suki won a million RM but Faizal won a million hearts.
Looking at my digital crystal ball, I am willing to wager that Faizal Tahir will outsell Suki Low, once their respective albums come out. Wait a minute! Will Suki actually invest all her winnings on her album? Hmmm. If you ask the cynical me, it would be wiser for her to take all that money and run, and do something else with it. Which I think will be the most probable outcome. If that is the case, then we have all been gloriously fooled, into thinking that we would have helped someone launch their musical career. Well, we will just have to wait and see. bUT
